Labor Day

The idea of celebrating one day during the year as special for the foundation and stability of our nation seemed like a good one to me when I got old enough to realize that every man-made item in my Lowell world was the product of someone’s labor.

The trees, scrubs, flowers, pigeons and even the Merrimack River, however, were natural, a result of many causes going back centuries or eons, even before the days of Greek antiquity.

Both of these phenomena seemed interesting to know about, but Labor Day focused only on the human production process.

The US Congress had created this public holiday in XXX when Republicans and Democrats finally could agree on the civic measure.

My Question – How do we celebrate? – Is it a paid holiday? Now or before?

Other events like Christmas, Thanksgiving, birthdays, military parades, charity balls, weddings, baseball games and even funerals have a said format to follow, but not Labor Day. So, we are left to our own devices or imagination in this case.

The following extracts taken from the Lowell Sun over the years give new meaning to Labor Day, or so I hope.
